We get asked for “baby shower decoration” perhaps four times a week, and about half the time the family actually means a godh bharai. They are different functions with different requirements, and getting the wrong setup is an expensive kind of disappointing.
Here is how we tell them apart, and what each one needs.
Baby shower
A western-style baby shower is built around a backdrop and a photo corner. The mother-to-be is seated centrally, guests are mostly her own generation, and the day is photographed on phones.
What it needs:
- A pastel balloon wall or ceiling installation
- A seating arrangement or decorated chair for the mother-to-be
- A styled dessert or cake table
- A welcome sign or name board
- Space to play games, which means clear floor
Colours: pastel pink, sage and cream; blue, white and silver; or a neutral palette with one accent.
Godh bharai
A godh bharai is a ceremony, and the décor has to serve it rather than just frame photographs. Elders are present, the women of the family sit around the mother-to-be, and there is a ritual sequence.
What it needs:
- A decorated seat or floral swing, at the right height to sit in for an hour
- Fresh marigold and jasmine, not artificial
- A clear space for the rangoli
- Room for the family to sit in a circle around her
- A thali and pooja arrangement area
Colours: yellow, orange and red marigold; traditional gold and green.
The swing is the thing people photograph and the thing grandparents remember. It is worth doing properly.
Naming ceremony and annaprashan
Both of these centre on the cradle and the name board, not on the mother.
The cradle décor is the whole setup in most families’ photographs, so we use fresh flowers on it rather than plastic — the difference is visible in every picture taken that day, and it is the detail elders notice first.
An annaprashan adds a decorated low platform for the feeding ceremony.

A setup that has to hold from a morning muhurat into an evening reception is built differently from a three-hour afternoon function — heavier fittings, hardier flowers, and a check partway through. Say at the quote stage how long the function runs.
One thing worth deciding early
Whether your function is one event or two. Plenty of Pune families now do a godh bharai in the morning for the elders and a baby shower in the afternoon for friends, in the same space.
That is very doable, but it is a re-set between the two, not a single setup — and it needs to be quoted as such rather than discovered on the day.
